The central trade-off
A Rolleiflex is comparatively self-contained. A Hasselblad invites building a system around interchangeable backs, lenses and finders. Both require careful mechanical evaluation and a willingness to shoot deliberately.
There is no universal winner. A camera is an interface between a person and a process. What matters is whether that interface matches your intended use and whether a specific surviving specimen can still deliver it.
Rolleiflex 2.8F
The Rolleiflex 2.8F sits near the peak of classic twin-lens reflex design. Viewing at waist level alters the photographer’s relationship with a subject, while the lens and shutter make servicing an important part of ownership.
Check taking and viewing lenses separately, hood and screen, lens-to-film alignment, transport spacing and shutter speeds.
Lens variants and accessories influence collector interest; a bright viewfinder is not evidence that the taking lens is clean.
Hasselblad 500C/M
Hasselblad’s modular 500 system gives a photographer control over lenses, backs and finders. The 500C/M improved serviceability with interchangeable focusing screens, and the system remains culturally and mechanically distinctive.
Check back light seals, spacing, body-lens timing, shutter firing at every speed and matching serials for backs.
Ask a seller to demonstrate the entire body, back and lens combination. Never force a Hasselblad interlock.
What changes the buying decision
Compare equivalent-condition examples only. Body-only listings, lens kits, shutter service, film backs, viewfinders and accessories can dramatically change the total. A recently serviced lower-prestige camera can be more useful than a famous but untested one.
Check whether film, batteries, processing and repairs are available for the kind of photography you want to make. If this will be a display object, originality and completeness may outweigh practical operating condition.
The next step
Read each dedicated dossier, then use the external completed-sale searches to understand current real-world transactions. Do not buy from a comparison headline alone.
